According to Boston researchers, low-glycemic dieting appears to be
healthier and more effective than low-fat dieting. They found
low-glycemic dieters not only lost the same amount of weight as low-fat
dieters, low-glycemic dieters had less fatty substances in the blood.
Also, their body’s ability to dissolve blood clots in the blood stream
was enhanced. Every food has a glycemic index value that reflects how
quickly it is digested into the blood stream. Foods with lower glycemic
indexes take longer to digest, enter the blood stream more slowly and
provide a greater sense of fullness after consumption. Foods with a
lower glycemic index include nonstarchy vegetables, fruits, nuts,
legumes and yogurt. Source: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. May 2005. |
